Master of Computer Application charm fades for students

AHMEDABAD: Is the Master of Computer Application (MCA) course also following Master of Business Administration (MBA) in losing favour with students? With the admission process scheduled to begin from July 1, all eyes are on MCA which had no takers for more than 50% seats last year.

Declining job prospects is the main reason behind the decreasing popularity of the course. However, officials squarely blame the decision of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for the large number of empty seats. The AICTE had from last year allowed colleges to admit students directly into the third semester. This not only doubled the strength of students but also candidates for direct entry into the third semester were not in accordance with the increase in the number of seats.

Students, who had completed their Bachelor of Computer Application or their graduation in Bachelor of Science with mathematics, were eligible for direct entry into the third semester. This had led to increase in vacant seats last year, said officials.

Member secretary of the Admission Committee for Professional Courses, U V Shah, said that the direct entry into third year led to around 505 seats falling vacant. Last year, the number of colleges with enrolment of less than 20 students were 50. Of the 161 colleges, only 63 had 100% enrolment. He said if the trend continues, many colleges like MBA will be closing down.

He, however, said seats were not only vacant in rural colleges but urban colleges too last year.

Officials said, "We are expecting more seats to fall vacant this year as compared to last year. The number could be anywhere around staggering 7,500 seats."

A principal of an MCA college said that despite the increase in the number of seats, career opportunity in the state is very limited. There have been talks of developing Gujarat as an information technology hub but this has not translated for job opportunities for students.

Savita Gandhi, director of Rollwala Computer Centre, says MCA degree not only has value but also holds repute in the society. More and more students who complete their bachelor's course in computer application join the master's course for further specialization. Salary package is on an average 20,000 to 25,000 per month. She said that the increase in seat capacity is resulting in vacant positions. The management before starting a college does not go in for assessment of the need and just follows others.

R P Soni, director, Computer Application college, GLS campus, said that the starting package may appear to be small, but once the student starts working, the package increases and one finds good scope for growth also. He, however, said that many students compare it with the fees of commerce, BCA and MCA, but these are very comparative as compared to other courses.
